Do you know someone who is particularly successful at reading and listening effectively so that they make the most of their time without having to re-read an assigned chapter or text? Is this person always able to finish his or her reading assignments for all his or her classes, while still having time for studying for an upcoming history exam? Is this person able to concentrate on major themes or concepts and retain the knowledge that he or she has just read? When reading, does this person always have a pen or a highlighter in his or her hand? Do find that this person always is able to retain knowledge from a lecture?
Does this person display an attention span that is beyond the level of the other students in your class? How does this person deal with distractions when focusing on reading and listening to the material that is presented to him or her? Would others benefit from his or her experiences? If so, nominate this person to be the focus of the Speaking of Success feature in chapter seven of the next edition of P.O.W.E.R. Learning. In a brief essay, written in the space below, explain why you feel this person would be a good choice as a role model for successful reading and listening abilities. Be sure to use specific examples of his or her success. Broad generalities won't suffice. At the end of the semester, all students using the text and this Web site will be allowed to vote for their choice, although you will not be able to vote for your nomination. The student receiving the most votes may be featured in the next edition of the text, if he or she so chooses. You can view the current entries here.
