"Wrestling with words gave me my moments of greatest meaning."
- Richard Wright, author
The ability to communicate is the basis for success in many of life's arenas, whether it be in college classes, relationships, or work. But be it either formal or informal, effective communication is dependent on writing and speaking clearly-a nearly impossible task without preparation. Knowing what you want to say and how to say it, as well as knowing whom your audience is all contribute to the preparation stage of writing and speaking.
Outlining or mapping a pathway through the body of a paper or a speech may seem like a waste of time, but ultimately, will streamline the writing process by giving you a direction to follow. In other words, pre-thought prevents afterthought. And finally, through the process of revision, you should be able to produce a clear and compelling document.
The exercises in this chapter give you an opportunity to practice writing and preparing speeches for different purposes and different audiences.
