We are all part of our cultural, religious, and racial heritage. Even though we may think of ourselves as Canadians, most of us have relatives that immigrated from somewhere else in the world. How much of that heritage are you aware of? How much of that heritage has influenced your way of thinking or your way of behaving? Will future generations forget entirely about their cultural history? The World Wide Web has made it easier, not only to learn about other cultures, but to post information about a particular culture or religious heritage.

In an effort to preserve information about your cultural or religious heritage, or in order to overcome cultural stereotypes, your assignment is to design a Web page that will inform your friends, your extended family, or your future children about your heritage. You will not actually design and post the page, but rather make decisions about what topics should be included. Consult the sites below for a range of styles. You may also use them to learn more about your own heritage. Or use your favorite search engine, such as http://www.google.com to find out more information about your particular background. Use your "Back" button or back arrow to return to this page and finish the exercise.

Having done some research on what kind of information you would like to post to your virtual Web site, answer the following questions as a preliminary design for those pages.

What is your cultural/religious heritage?

How long ago did your family arrive in this country?

Are you indigenous to this country?

How influential is your heritage on your beliefs and behaviours? (none - somewhat - very)

In the design of a Web page, there is usually a navigation bar either across the top of the page or along the left side listing the topics to be covered on the site. List the topics you feel are important that others know about your heritage.

In designing a Web page, there is usually a Home Page that explains the purpose of the Web site. Write an introduction to your Web site explaining the purpose of the site and giving a brief background to the culture being described.

Select one topic from your navigation bar that you have considerable knowledge about, or that you would like to research. Write an introduction to that page.

Your professor may want you to send him/her a copy of this. Just fill out the information below, press the "Submit" button and a copy will be sent to each e-mail address given. Or, you may prefer to print out this page to save a copy for your records.
