P.O.W.E.R. at Work: Anticipating Career Stress

Jeff Hahn is the Vice President for McGraw-Hill/Dushkin Publishing Company. He majored in broadcast and journalism at the University of Rhode Island. Below he describes how he effectively deals with work-related stress.

  1. Work-related stress has been linked to many health problems, such as, heart disease and depression. Unfortunately, many of us do not take this occupational hazard into account when making a career decision. How much emphasis did you put forth on this issue when making your career choice?

  2. Certain occupations require less tolerance for error than others. For example, an air traffic controller has virtually no margin for error, due to the consequences that may ensue, while a graphic designer can easily rectify a mistake with fewer repercussions. Investigating the demands of a particular profession can sometimes give you a sense of how much stress would be involved in a career. Can you give some insight on what demands your position entails?

  3. What do you feel is the level of stress that these work-related demands force upon you?

  4. Over the last few decades, employers have realized that reducing work-related stress could result in higher productivity and less employee turnover. As a result, some businesses have constructed fitness centers in their facilities so that workers are able to relieve stress by exercising while others have reduced the traditional forty-hour work week to allow more personal time. Are there any similar efforts done by your company?
