Statistics Canada, as Canada's national statistical agency, provides information on virtually all aspects of the nation's economy, society, environment, and state. One of the primary vehicles for disseminating this information is through Statistics Canada's web site at http://www.statcan.ca/. Statistics Canada data can be used in all subjects in school. The data are current, reliable, and accurate. Several areas of Statistics Canada's web site are highlighted below. A series of sequenced lessons on building skills using the Statistics Canada data and website are also available on the McGraw Hill site.
- The Daily
http://www.statcan.ca/english/dai-quo/ This is Statistics Canada's official release bulletin. The Daily is updated each business day and contains highlights of each release and information on where to find more information on the particular releases. It is a great starting point when doing research. Users can also subscribe to receive notices of new data releases for specific subjects.
- Canadian Statistics
http://www.statcan.ca/english/Pgdb/ This module contains over 500 tables of data on the land, the economy, the people, and the nation. The data in these tables covers the most recent statistics and usually the previous 5 years. The tables are mostly at national and provincial levels. For example, you can find the latest numbers on households using the Internet and the purpose for home use of the Internet.
- Community Profiles
http://www12.statcan.ca/english/profil01/PlaceSearchForm1.cfm This module contains demographic data from the most recent Censuses of Population for all 5000 communities in Canada (cities, towns, villages, and townships) for counties or their equivalents and for metropolitan areas, as well as data for health regions. The module also has a mapping feature.
- Student Resources
http://www.statcan.ca/english/edu/students.htm In the Learning Resources area, students can locate resources to help with homework assignments.
- E-STAT
http://estat.statcan.ca/. This site can also be accessed through the Learning Resources section of the Statistics Canada web site by clicking on the E-STAT banner.
E-STAT is an interactive database containing thousands of tables on the economy (such as gross domestic product and imports and exports), the people (demographic data for Canada, the provinces, counties, cities, towns, and villages and neighbourhoods), and the environment. E-STAT allows users to graph and map data. E-STAT is available free on the Statistics Canada web site, only to educational institutions that sign up for it.
If you are accessing E-STAT from a computer at a school that is registered, you will not need a username and password to get access. If you are accessing it from home, you will need the username and password for your school or board.
- Historical Statistics of Canada
http://www.statcan.ca/english/freepub/11-516-XIE/sectiona/toc.htm This document contains economic, demographic and socio-economic data for Canada from the 1870s to the 1970s.
- Statistics: Power From Data!
http://www.statcan.ca/english/edu/power/toc/contents.htm This is a great resource for learning how to collect and use data. The online resource aims to help students gain confidence in using statistical information to complete study requirements, appreciate the importance of statistical information in today's society, and make critical use of information that is presented to them.
