SEEKING THE CORE
October 21/03: What is the source of inner peace and self-confidence that allows some people to see each new challenge as an exciting opportunity, while others see only defeat and stress? Is such admirable resilience something you have to be born with, or can anybody learn to have it? Readers get the answers to these and other profound life questions in THE POWER OF RESILIENCE by Robert Brooks, Ph.D. and Sam Goldstein, Ph.D.
"Our experiences as psychologists and parents have taught us that certain guideposts can help people nurture a resilient mindset," say Brooks and Goldstein.
In THE POWER OF RESILIENCE, they describe the main features of a resilient mindset and offer specific ideas and strategies to develop this mindset based on the "Ten Keys for Resilient Living," as follows:
1. Changing the words of life: rewriting your negative scripts 2. Choosing the path to become stress hardy rather than stressed out 3. Viewing life through the eyes of others 4. Communicating effectively 5. Accepting oneself and others 6. Making connections and displaying compassion 7. Dealing effectively with mistakes 8. Dealing well with success in building islands of competence 9. Developing self-discipline and self-control 10. The lessons of resilience: maintaining a resilient lifestyle
Drs. Brooks and Goldstein include numerous real-life examples from people they have worked with in their clinical practice and those who have shared their stories in their workshops. The book also includes worksheets (p. 271-290) that can be used to personalize and assess an individual's answers to each of the exercises in the book as well as a chapter-by-chapter listing of the obstacles, guideposts, and strategies involved in reinforcing a resilient mindset and lifestyle.
Robert Brooks, Ph.D. is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and is a speaker on the themes of resilience, self-esteem, motivations and family relationships. Sam Goldstein, Ph.D. is a clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Utah and is one of today's leading speakers and authorities on child development and neuropsychology. Brooks and Goldstein paired to write two popular parenting texts on the topic of resilience: Raising Resilient Children and Nurturing Resilience in Your Children.
